Today, Jonathan Pollard marks 26 years of being in prison. Jonathan provided U.S. confidential information to the State of Israel, information that the United States undertook to share with Israel but did not.
Thirteen years ago, an agreement to release Pollard was made between Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister and Bill Clinton, then president of the United States. The suitcases were already packed and then suddenly the White House announced the cancellation of the agreement.
In the past year, Israeli ministers, Knesset members and U.S. senators appealed to President Obama to release Pollard. Yet, those requests have didn't affect the white.
A few weeks ago Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held in captive by Hamas was released. Hamas is a terrorist organization that normally does not respect agreements. Shalit was held captive for more than five years in severe conditions, but eventually returned home and is healthy and safe.
Jonathan Pollard, however, is still in prison. From what is known, Jonathan is held in harsh conditions, poor health and his punishment is not proportional to similar cases in the states.
Should we conclude that the United States is worse than Hamas, or should we blame only the government?
I believe the second explanation is true, but if so, the American people have a responsibility to protest and not remain indifferent.
היום מלאו 26 שנה לכליאתו של יונתן פולארד, אדם שמסר למדינת ישראל מידע סודי של ארצות הברית, מידע שארצות הברית התחייבה להעביר לישראל אבל לא עשתה כן.
לפני שלוש עשרה שנה נחתם הסכם בין בנימין נתניהו, ראש ממשלת ישראל ובין ביל קלינטון, אז נשיא ארצות הברית על שחרורו של פולארד. המזודות היו כבר ארוזות ואז הודיע הבית הלבן לפתע על ביטול ההסכם.
שרים, חברי כנסת ישראלים וסנאטורים אמריקאים פנו לנשיא אובאמה בבקשה לשחרר את פולארד. הבקשות הרבות לא נענו.
לפני מספר שבועות שוחרר החייל גלעד שליט, חייל שהוחזק בשבי החמאס, ארגון טרור שבדרך כלל לא מכבד הסכמים. שליט הוחזק בשבי למעלה מחמש שנים בתנאים חמורים מאוד, אבל בסופו של דבר הוחזר לביתו והוא בריא ושלם.
יונתן פולארד לעומת זאת, עדיין בכלא. ממה שידוע, הוא מוחזק בתנאים קשים, מצבו הבריאותי גרוע ועונשו חמור מאוד ביחד לענישה המקובלת בארצות הברית במקרים דומים.
האם עלינו להסיק שארצות הברית גרועה מהחמאס, או שמא יש לנו להאשים רק את הממשל?
אני מאמין שההסבר השני נכון, אבל אם כך, על העם האמריקאי מוטלת האחריות למחות ולא להישאר אדיש.
